Nuggets Top Blazers As Anthony Stars

July 27th, 2010

Carmello Anthony scored 41 points and the Denver Nuggets used a second half comeback to give the Portland Trailblazers a rare 97-94 loss at their Rose Garden Arena home venue on Thursday night. The Blazers held a 67-62 lead heading into the final quarter but for the second time in as many games had trouble putting their opponent away. Brandon Roy led Portland with 30 points, and Greg Oden was the high rebounder for the home team with 9 boards. Portland is now 1-1 on the young NBA season, while Denver improved to 2-0.

NBA pointspread players who took Denver as +8 road underdogs enjoyed their outright victory and the ensuing payday. The Nuggets have covered the number in both of their victories this season, while Portland evened their ATS mark at 1-1.

After the game, Anthony was happier about the victory than his personal offensive outburst:

“We came out here and stole the win. It wasn’t just an important win. It was a battle.”

Anthony made 7 of 9 shots from the floor and 9 of 10 free throws in the decisive fourth quarter run:

“My shots were going in. I was trying to attack. I got to the rim and the foul line.”

Portland’s Greg Oden was taking the loss hard, as he missed a couple of late game free throws that could have given the Blazers a lead:

“This is a tough one. I definitely stepped up there with confidence thinking I was going to hit both and it didn’t go that way. I put this loss on me. I need to step up and make those.”

Team leader Brandon Roy said that he’d give the Blazers’ big man a pep talk:

“The biggest thing is to let go. We all miss shots, you’ve got to forget about it.”

Roy also added that the choppy pace of the game with a lot of fouls called benefitted Denver playing in back-to-back games:

“I think it benefited them a bit more coming off a back-to-back. They were tired but anytime you slow the game down that much, it gives them a chance to recover.”

The Blazers will head to Texas for a rematch against the Houston Rockets on Halloween night. Portland beat the Rockets to open their NBA season. They’ll play at Oklahoma City on Sunday before returning home for a game at The Rose Garden against the Atlanta Hawks on Tuesday. Denver will head back to ‘The Mile High City’ for a game against Memphis on Sunday before an east coast road trip with stops in Indiana and New Jersey early next week.

Book Review For The Lightening Thief

July 27th, 2010

Rick Riordan’s The Lightening Thief is one of a kind. The first in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians Series, this book sets the pace for the other books to follow. Often times fantasy books focus on humans having super powers, or they bring in the same tried and worn types of generic characters such as elves or vampires. Riordan, however, goes to an entirely new level and brings back a concept so old one can’t help but admire his work.

In The Lightening Thief, the hero, Percy Jackson, discovers he’s a “half-blood”, or someone that is half god and half mortal. He lives with his supportive mother; a poor New Yorker working in a candy shop, assuming his father is dead. Later, through a series of dangerous events, he discovers his father is alive and is actually Poseidon, the god of the sea. Suddenly, everything he’s ever known about the world is turned upside down as Percy realizes the mythological gods and creatures are real and exist even in the modern world.

This fresh spin on ancient mythology in a modern day world has a way of captivating the audience. The Lightening Thief will have readers plowing through the book at the most obscure times, unable to put it down. The way Riordan combines modern day America and monsters is a true work of art.

Perhaps one of the most fascinating aspects of this book is the tone used. Because a twelve-year-old boy tells the story, everything has a very light and humorous spin to it. Even the most gripping scenes will have humorous parts that could only be brought to light from the perspective of a young boy.

While the Percy Jackson series are a bit long, they are by far worth starting. Riordan’s stunning plot and original ideas are refreshing. Now the only thing one needs to worry about while reading is whether he or she is in a safe environment. A home security system is one of the best ways to do this.

Help For The Newbie Photographer

July 25th, 2010

Are you keen on photography? If it sounds like a fascinating past-time or a likely source of money in the future, continue reading. Many folks new to the pursuit are nervous about their techniques for achieving quality photographs.

It isn’t financially possible to hire an expert to give some tips, and taking a photography class wants an investment of more time than many folks can afford. The most efficient way to enter the area of beginner photographers is to get a top quality camera and hope the publicized fantastic enchanting features essentially work as claimed, helping to reach high spec footage without having any formal training or cognizance of particular photographic strategies.

The truth is that these features truly do work, but they are not enough to guarantee pro quality stills.

We have all taken footage of loved ones on holidays, on holiday, and at special events. We’ve recorded pictures for posterity, for the only point of having a record of a selected person or place at a particular time to fire fond recollections at some point in the future.

But many people enjoy looking thru the lens and need to use the camera on a more frequent basis.

One frequent mistake of beginner photographers is the omission to guarantee most are in the picture frame. When taking a group picture, it’s crucial that everybody appears in the final print.

You do not need to find out after the picture is developed that somebody on the end is cut in half! A little extra care before snapping the shutter is all it takes to stop this humiliation.

Another bugaboo of amateur photographers is gauging the angle of sunlight in an out of doors image. This may really affect the standard of the final picture. Shooting straight into the sun may cause dark shading on the picture, while having the sun behind you’ll have it shining straight into your subjects’ eyes, leading them to squint.

These are merely two pointers to get you moving on your new past-time. The memories you are conserving will literally last a lifetime!

Taking On The Zero Turn John Deere Lawn Mower

July 25th, 2010

No one would disagree that the most important responsibility of owning your house is the upkeep. Maybe no task defines this better than cropping the grass. It’s never been a welcomed chore, but there was an epiphany for some and it’s come in the shape of the zero turn John Deere lawn mower. With a complete handling system, it makes mowing the yard more of a playing video game.

The handles are simply designed and terribly intuitive. With a seat atop the mower like an ordinary rider, this machine features no wheel. Instead, there are levers on each side of the seat. The driver may advance or backwards according to their direction. The rate is controlled by how you pushes or pulls. A mix of pulling one and pushing the other will result in auto turns, which includes a ability to spin 360 degrees while remaining ready.

The handling is quite intuitive and the mower itself is surprisingly exciting to ride. Not to mention, its mobility far outmatches the average riding mover, giving it the power to handle those hard-to-reach spots round the yard. 2 new Deere mower lines offer exactly this.

EZtrak Series home : This is designed for the average medium-sized homeowner. It sucks up grass and weeds for 4 acres till it has to be emptied out. The system controls make allowance for simple mobility around trees and fences, and the high-quality mower decks sever most everything in their trail.

ZTrak Estate Series : for those that have a genuine hunk of land, this is the vehicle to go with. It has parking lights on the side, which give the opportunity to safely take it onto the road, and with its air-cooled Kohler engines, it will work for hours at a time without overheating in the summer sun.

With such amazing mobility and top quality trimming machinery, there’s not very much of a discussion against these units. Any machine that turns cropping the turf into a quick and fun activity is worth at least checking out. These John Deere lawn mower lines, with their zero turn systems, should be first on the list.

Next, reviewer Stephen Drury includes some pieces you will really want to find out about John Deere’s range of lawn mowers from the John Deere Mowers Online blog.

What To Search For When Buying An Air Compressor

July 25th, 2010

It seems that many woodworkers don’t have an air compressor, merely because they sound complicated.

Some of the convenient terms that you must truly know about when looking out for a compressor include:

PSI – Pounds per square inch

CFM – Cubic feet per minute

Duty Cycle – how long a compressor can run compared to the quantity of rest time over a thirty minute period. Like it can operate for ten minutes, then rest for twenty without making major head wear

Single Stage – where the compression piston compresses all the air in one stroke

Versus 2 Stage – where there are 2 pistons that work in cooperation to squeeze the air.

If you’re counting on running tools like sanders, buffers, grinders and so on you will need to think about something in the mid-size or maybe bigger shop size of compressors.

If you’re planning on employing grinders, sanders, buffers and the like, you’ll need to consider an enormous fixed base compressor like Campbell – Hausfeld or Ingersoll-Rand. These will have around 6 hp and a storage tank of 50 gallons or more . If you are a hobbyist woodworker, who is looking for a nailer or stapler, one of the little portable compressors is perfect. Makers like Porter-Cable or Delta will work fine.

The genuine trick to buying a compressor is to grasp beforehand what you are going to use it for and what the air-tool rating is in PSI and CFM. This could give you a better indication of the duty cycle you’ll need. But this isn’t the end either, because you must look CLOSELY at the air tools you are considering as the same tool can alter noticeably in the amount of compressed air it’ll consume. That is’s massively important, and it suggests the difference between purchasing a mid-size compressor or massive fixed compressor. A compressor and associated air powered tools might be a real time saver, even for the hobbyist’s work shop.

In the final research you’ll have to make that difficult call, but what ever you do, ensure you guarantee you get a workable compressor for your choice of tools.

Die Cast Model Cars Are Valuable Collectors Items

July 18th, 2010

The idea that die cast model cars are valuable collectors items is probably true, since they have been classed as collectibles since the 1930s. In 1934, Dinky Toys brought out die cast metal toy cars, which presumably parents brought for little boys, who grew up to be men who still liked the cars, and turned play into collecting.

Anyway, contrast these collectibles with Beanie Babies, which turned out to be a fad. Nowadays you see them mainly in thrift shops, not in display cases or mounted on lamp stands. You do see die cast cars in thrift shops, but they are segregated and individually priced, not thrown in with other small toys as the cute little baby animals are.

Why collect car models? Well, why collect anything? You either get it or you don’t. But collecting these little (3″) or not so little cars (10″ – 12″) does make sense to a lot of people. To begin with, they may have started as toys, but they soon developed in to scale models, or miniaturized representations of actual vehicles. They are true to life in proportion and detail, thereby rising above the toy level to the distinction of true models.

Die cast cars have traditionally been made of metal of one sort of another, or a combination of metals, forced into a mold while molten, with much pressure to fill the mold and to allow the metal to harden. Today you can also have die cast (or diecast, since the terms are used interchangeably) plastic cars. The metal ones are the collectible ones of choice, it seems, although early plastics have definitely become collectible, so who knows?

The models are still being enthusiastically made, and the age of the model does not seem to automatically raise the price. As in the original, actual car, the appeal is in the eye of the beholder. A model car may be a remembrance, of the VW bug that was your first car, of the memories that are aroused by the sight of a 1969 Mustang convertible, or of sitting on the floor watching the General Lee fulfill all your six-year old ideas of what a car could do.

It may also be as close as you will ever get to owning a Ferrari, say, or a Lamborghini. If you really always wanted one, somebody is sure to give you a model for Christmas sooner or later. If you really rate, it may be a premium model with doors that open, a steering wheel that turns not only itself but the wheels as well, and a working suspension. If your friends really get carried away, they may get you one with a working internal combustion engine, although they are venturing close to the toy line here.

As in all collecting, it is wise to focus. You may want to start with police cars, with all the versions of the Batmobile, with cars from famous movies, or from the era of history that interests you most. The choice of models in all these categories and more is very large, and there are many manufacturers who used to and/or are still making these small vehicles.

It can turn into a hobby, too; you may want to put your cars into display cases and hang them on the wall, but you may want to restore them, airbrushing on bright, glossy colors, or set them in dioramas with little, die cast gangsters or carhops or service men just the right scale to match.

Anyway, model cars are valuable collectors items – valuable in terms of the fun of it all if not in the investment possibilities.

Model cars aren’t just for kids. Die cast models cars on classic cars are treasures of our past.

Understand The Downside Of Pursuing Complete Sets Of Farmville Collectables

July 15th, 2010

Farmville collectables are another fun activity for happy players in this extremely famous online game, one that adds to the richness and range of a virtual farming adventure. The purpose of acquiring collectables is to create a “collection” consisting of a full set of the artifacts you happen to be buying. Men and women collect these virtual products for the same reason that a person in the physical world might collect coins and here are three of them.

1. Folks accumulate these virtual goodies for reasons that aren’t that different from the Real World. Why does anyone collect old records, toys, coins, stamps, old magazines or jewelry? Every collectible has something about it that appeals to the collector, something that causes the object to be special and interesting in some way.

Reason #2: There is definitely an element of chance in the items you can acquire, so everybody will not have complete sets. There is a certain amount of fame involved in owning either a complete set or a large number of collectables and most people love the attention that comes with success.

3. Many people simply love to collect – even in a virtual world – and for them the collections are reward enough. However, collecting can also be a deliberate game strategy because there are substantial rewards for a complete set. These include 5,000 game coins to spend any way you please, five free tanks of gas to run your seeder, harvester or tractor and 250XP (Experience Points). Of course, you might spend your coin on various collections – and never complete any of them. So it’s both a strategy and a gamble.

Like all computer games, there is a basic decision to be made: do you want to stop often along the way – or do you want to move up in the game as fast as possible? collectables might slow you down because you spend coin trying to complete your collection. On the other hand, you might move faster because of the awards mentioned above. Each player must make that decision alone.

Popups Are A Rich Source of Collectables: When you’re online playing Farmville, you will randomly receive popups of various kinds. The are a rich source of collectables – but there is no control over what you receive. If some wonderful goodie appears on your screen, just when you least expect it, act quickly! They often disappear in only seconds.

Lazy People Can Forget The Collectables Game: You can acquire collectables by doing specific farm tasks like planting, fertilizing and picking your crops. People who don’t choose to work are just out of luck – but don’t feel sorry for them because it’s their own fault.

Give Gifts To Your Buddies: One of the keys to completing multiple collections is to give and receive gifts from your Neighbors. You might have a piece they’re desperate for which you bought in a popup. You can exchange gifts and you both win. The best way to become friends with these lovely neighbors is by watching the game feeds. Gamers add “wall postings” and you can meet kindred spirits this way.

Zynga, the game’s developers, classify all collectables into the three distinct classes: Common, Uncommon and Rare. Bug collectors, for example, will find Common caterpillars everywhere but the Uncommon beetle will be harder to add to your stash of items.

What Collectables Can I Acquire? There are sets to collect like the “Country Kitsch Collection” which contains 3 Common items, 2 Uncommon and a Rare one. The Common items are needlepoint, a spigot and a pocket watch. To finish the collection you need the Uncommon objects which are a salt shaker and a thimble, plus a cow bell, which is the Rare goodie. These categories seem a bit strange because in the Real World a thimble is a very common and easy-to-acquire object. But in this virtual gaming community, a thimble will be harder to find than a pocket watch so it is availability that determines a designation.

Should I or Shouldn’t I? You are the only person who can decide whether collecting is “right” for you. The appearance of collectables is entirely random and you have no power at all to acquire a treasure that you’ve been seeking for a long time. In other words, there is an element of gambling. If you’re comfortable with the game being haphazard, then you will receive pleasure from playing. If if makes you uneasy, forget the entire collectables action in Farmville.

Our free Farmville guide will assist you to learn about Farmville collectables, animals, trees and crop planting and harvesting.
